Forest cover and loss
- Forest cover based on Global Forest Resource Assessment 2015, Desk Reference. Table 2, page 9-15.
- Global top 20 most forested tropical countries
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
- 150 million forest cover loss between 1990 and 2015 in top 20 forested tropical countries based on:
- 159.515.4000 hectares forest cover 1990 – 144.549.8000 hectares forest cover 2015 = 149.656.000 => 150 million hectares loss
- 27.5 million hectares forest loss in Indonesia 1990 – 2015
- 118.545.000 hectares forest cover 1990 – 910.100.00 hectares forest cover in 2015 = 275.350.00 => 27.5 million hectares lost
Forest loss due to palm oil
- 11% maximum forest loss due to palm oil (1990 – 2015) when taken into account 17,3 million hectares (Oil World Annual, 2016) in 2015 in Global top 20 most forested tropical countries:
-
- 17,3 million hecatares / 150 million hectares * 100% = 11%
- 5% forest loss due to palm oil when taken into account that palm oil is also planted on former plantations and degraged land. Vijay et al. (2016) calculated that 45% of the palm oil can be linked to direct deforestation
Forest fires
- Figures on forest firest in Indonesia in 2016 retrieved from Global Forest Watch analysis 1 january – 31 december 2016. Accesed on 17-01-2017.
This is also in line with other studies that indicate that palm oil is not the sole driver of deforestation. See also the 2016 Climate Focus report.
